A pair of Lions
Guarding their cubs!
We had an amazing experience during this tour as these two lions hunted gazelle, and made a kill right in front of our eyes.
Mothers with young need to eat at least every 2 days, to keep up with the milk supply for the first 6 - 8 weeks of their cubs life.
A hunt and a kill is anyone's dream catch in Africa, pure wild animals, no fences anywhere, all natural!
Taken with the Swarovski Spotting Scope, STX with a 65mm lens, = 1200mm effective focal length.

1/250s f11.5 iso400Four Royal Bengal Tigers - Tiger tours to India are extremely safe, and so much fun. We stay in a very comfortable hotel, with more comfort and great service then one would expect. Our guides, drivers, hotel services are exceptional.
High local temperatures are surprisingly comfortable with very low humidity at 12 to 15%. The roads can be bumpy, and dusty, but the reward is superb! At least 2,000 images of tigers during our 15 safaris! So many to choose from, so I do plan to be posting a few over the next couple of weeks if I have time.
We leave for Costa Rica Thursday, so life is busy!
Safe travels everyone, more soon!
Thanks for looking!

A Second Edit!
One of my favourite shots from the recent tour to India, I did one extra adjustment in PhotoShop, adding a little shadow to darken the blacks
in the background.
Hope you like the edit? More tiger tours coming soon, please let me know if you are interested.

A young warthog bites the dust! - 1 of 8 images.
These are definitely not my best images, my camera was all set up for the lions sitting in the shade! Then Bang! this happens.. no time to adjust, so I just fire away and hope! Also, mid-day sun, bright, and heat wave did affect the images.

1/800s f/7.1 at 400.0mm iso400A mating pair of lions, on a schedule of about every 12 minutes, would lay and rest in between attempts... He would usually stand watch while she would pass out, and catch some sleep.
They do not hunt or eat during this time of their cycle, as they put full concentration into their procreation efforts.
Some time around June 1st would be superb to see the tiny cubs jumping around on their parents. Wish I was there!
Thanks to my guests, and thanks for looking!

1/800s f/4.0 at 400.0mm iso400A massive adult male Lion at Rest!
Their job is to sit, rest, protect the pride, procreate, and sleep!
The storied life of a big cat.
We travel to Tanzania to view and photography wild animals and birds, along with beautiful landscapes. We search for the best angle, light, pose, and hopefully some action. This latest tour gave us everything.
Here, this huge male was resting, and waiting for the pride to make the next kill, usually happening in the dark hours of the night. In our camp, at 3-4 am, we can hear the roars, and the fights with elephants and hyenas as they all fight for survival.
The morning light at sunrise is filled with excitement, as we trek out to the bush to see what happened. Early am us full of activity. This shot however was taken during the late afternoon, sun going down, and a rest time for the lions as they prepare for the evening hunt.
The look of content is what made this scene interesting for me.

A cheetah on the lookout for prey and enemies!
this beautiful healthy Cheetah and its partner were sitting in the tall grass, lounging when they popped up for a look. Sweet light, and just the right amount of depth of field to cover the animal in sharp focus made this one a favourite.
Such an incredibly superb cat! What a trip!

1/800s f/4.0 at 400.0mm iso500A Serengeti Lions Life
A short life in the big circle of the Serengeti. This 3-4 day old calf, disengaged from the herd and its parent female doesn't have a chance against the 400 pound Lioness.
Like many feline species, when they have a kill locked in, they will play with it for fun

1/200s f/5.6 at 220.0mm iso1250Nature is tough, and the strong survive.
From 15 yards, my guests and I watch this 300 pound lion munch a 4 day old wildebeest, dead in seconds... but like any smart cat she decided to have some fun.
Giving the young wildebeest a false scenes of hope, she let it go for periods of time (5-10 seconds) at a time, but not allowing it to go far .. a good game of cat and mouse? Finally, after a few swats, and whines from the wee one, life ended, as
another life continues.
Real wildlife drama, so amazing that we saw three live kills during this tour in February.
Best regards.

share some coffee!
Early am up and go in Tanzania, on our way to the airport we had one last visit with the young male and his partners.
We had about 3 hours of shooting time before we got on the plane in the Serengeti!
Three superb and beautiful females - one of them should be having cubs soon!

Maybe they are angry because it hurts?
Anyhow, we must have watched 15 mating's, then enough is enough!
Fun for us to see, but we know there is other stuff out there to photograph. This was a shot I have been trying to catch for many tours. Face on snarls. The environment could have been better, and more depth of field (if I was thinking) would have been nice!
Next time!
I am happy that his eyes were just a little open, so we could get a better grasp on the expression.
Good fun.
Thanks for looking.Awesome Cheetah
This beauty decided to pop up from the deep grass when it heard the call of some lions nearby. We were able to catch it's curious look, then seconds later the head would drop out of sight.
But still, a cool chance to catch a neat shot.
With this 600mm magnification, I was able to keep the close grass to the animal out of focus, as the image isolates solely on the expression.
Maybe one leaf too many in front of the face?
Never perfect, but fun trying!
Thanks for browsing my gallery.
ray@raymondbarlow.comProbably my favourite image so far from this past Africa tour, 2020.
A very timid leopard resting in a tree about 90 yards away, with some serious back-light. So it took some effort to get a clean shot. This is a vertical crop taken from the image that was shot in landscape crop.
I will post the horizontal version soon, still so many more to edit.
Thanks for looking!
Love Tanzania! What is around the next corner?
Lions sitting up on a fallen tree!
2 young lion cubs sit patiently waiting for the adults to return with dinner!
These lions are too young to be involved in hunting, so they are "instructed" to stay back and stay safe.
I did a poor job photographing these 2, as my setting were wrong, so i am happy to be able to salvage something from this shoot.
Please take some time to visit my friends blog, David Sparks. David joined me for his 3rd travel tour, and his second to Africa. During all three tours, we have had tremendous opportunities, so I hope David will join me again one day.
