A Gem in the Woods - Saw-whet Owl
(warning, a little gruesome!)
We almost finished a 1.5 hour hike in deep snow, when we came upon this tiny owl (about the size of a pop can!) deep in the woods. It was sitting quietly on its kill, almost totally hidden from view!
We found an angle and took a few shots. These birds a very friendly, and usually will not fly away, once found. The bird had already removed the voles stomach, as it (the stomach of the vole) was hanging on the branch below the kill. An amazing site to see in real nature!
